The Weight

005 / 019

We raise our arms when we give up. We raise our arms when we win. The Weight does not choose between them. It holds both at the same time, in the same gesture, in the same rosewood grain that catches light from every angle differently.

The torso twists because real weight never comes from one direction. It accumulates. It rotates the body slowly until the body either breaks or finds a new axis to live on. The figure has found its axis. The arms are up. What that means is yours to decide.

The Weight began with a paradox I couldn't resolve any other way. Arms raised is the posture of surrender and the posture of victory. They are the same gesture. I spent months trying to separate them and eventually understood that was the wrong question. The rosewood dictated the twist in the torso — that rotation was not designed, it was negotiated. Every time I tried to straighten it the form lost its honesty. The black marble base was the only possible ending: something that does not move, so everything above it can.
