There are moments the body exceeds itself. Not through effort. Through surrender. The legs find the floor, the torso releases, and something rises that was never asked to. The Ekstasis captures the instant before return — when a person has briefly become more than their own outline and the world has not yet pulled them back.

Ekstasis in Greek means to stand outside oneself. I did not choose this title — the piece demanded it. The figure is not dancing. It is caught in the precise instant before returning to itself, when the body has gone so far outward that gravity becomes a question rather than a law. The cherry wood made this possible. It bends visually in a way walnut refuses. The grain follows the movement as if the tree had already imagined this moment. The granite base is the only thing that insists on the ground.
