Sacrifice is not loss. It is the deliberate release of something real in the direction of something larger.
The arms of The Sacrifice open upward and outward — not grasping, not protecting. Giving. The ebonized oak holds no warmth on its surface. What warmth exists is in the space the form creates around itself, in the shadow twice its size that spreads across the wall behind it.
The piece does not ask for sympathy. It does not perform suffering. It simply stands in the posture of having decided — and having followed through.
The brushed steel beneath it does not soften the weight. It holds it exactly as it is.

The Sacrifice is the darkest piece in the studio — literally. The ebonized oak absorbs light rather than returning it. I made that choice early and committed to it: a piece about sacrifice should not be beautiful in the usual sense. It should be confrontational. The two arms open upward not in triumph but in offering. The shadow they cast on the wall behind is twice the size of the form itself. I realized during the making that the shadow was part of the work. The brushed steel base was the only material that could stand beneath it without competing.
