The Purpose

007 / 020

Purpose does not announce itself. It organizes everything around a line you cannot see until you stop looking for it.

The two forms of this piece never touch. They rise together from the same base, lean toward each other, hold the light between them. The warmth that escapes from within is not a detail. It is the subject. What two things protect when they choose not to collapse into each other.

The brushed steel reflects the floor back to itself. The wood holds the fire. Between them, something stands still that has earned its stillness.

Studio note

Alberto Palomino — Montréal, July 2025

The Purpose started with a single question: what does a figure look like when it has finally stopped searching. Not arrived. Not victorious. Simply aligned. The two forms wrap around each other from base to crown without ever touching, and the light lives in the gap between them. That gap was the hardest thing to achieve technically. Too wide and the tension disappears. Too narrow and the light suffocates. The brushed steel base was the only material that could hold this without competing. It disappears into the floor and lets the light do everything.
