The Grief

008 / 020

Grief does not bring you to your knees. What it actually does is leave you standing, upright, still sharp at the edges, while something inside has gone entirely still.

The Grief does not depict collapse. It depicts the moment after. The figure is still here, still vertical, the cherry wood still warm in the light. The marble base does not comfort. It simply holds.

Studio note

Alberto Palomino — Montréal, August 2025

The head bowed, the body still upright. That combination took months to find. A figure that has not collapsed but is entirely inside itself. The sharp planes along the torso were not planned as contrast — they emerged as the only honest way to show that grief does not soften everything. It coexists with edges. The cherry wood darkens toward the base where the two legs cross. I left that. It felt true.
