Mahogany

N° 027 / 031
To be a man is not to be complete. It is to stand in the posture of becoming.
The Man rises from darkness toward a single source. The light is not above him. It is at the end of his own outstretched form, as if the body had finally understood that what it reaches for and what it is made of are the same thing.
The mahogany carries this without softness. It is a warm wood, but it does not flatter. It holds the glow and the grain of effort. The figure is small in scale, yet the gesture travels the full length of the piece — from the rooted base to the luminous point where the form arrives.
There is no face. There is no need for one. The entire body is the expression.

Alberto Palomino — Montréal, August 2026
The Man came from a photograph taken at night. A single arm extended toward a light source, the rest of the body falling into shadow. I carved the figure from one piece of mahogany, keeping the surface raw and direct. The light at the top was not an addition — it was the reason for the form. Without it, the reach becomes longing. With it, the reach becomes arrival. The piece is intimate in size, but the vertical gesture gives it height beyond its dimensions.
