Ascent does not always mean height. Sometimes it is the decision to become visible.
The Ascent is small in scale but not in presence. Two forms mounted on a wall, each sending light outward in sharp, deliberate rays. The maple holds the source. The steel keeps the direction honest. Together they make a gesture that travels upward without moving.
Light, in this piece, is not decoration. It is the material doing its work. The beams do not illuminate the room. They mark the path the piece has already taken from matter into something less certain.
What rises is not the object. It is the attention of the person standing before it.

The Ascent came from a sketch about wall-mounted light. I wanted the smallest possible form to carry the largest possible gesture, so I kept the enclosures minimal — maple faces, steel sides — and let the light do the scaling. The dimensions are modest, but the reach of the beams changes the whole wall. That is the principle behind the piece: scale is measured by what is altered, not by what is held.
